The Cassell Dictionary of Chemistry
Published in Hardcover by Cassell Academic (May, 1999)
Authors: Gillian Waites and Percy Harrison
Average review score:

Great for study and trivia
This fall, I'm taking my second year of high school chemistry, and am preparing for the AP exam. This book, which I first discovered at my local library, is an awesome prep tool for exams. If you need a study tool that leaves nothing out (and I do mean nothing -- it included a definition of deuterium, which I had heard only on Star Trek. It turns out to be a heavy H-2 isotope!) then this is the way to go.

Average review score:

Chalice Worship
This book is great for personal devotions and public worship. While some material is very unorthodox (maybe even heretical) and should be avoided, the vast majority of material presented is of great benefit to individuals and congregations alike, not to mention very inspiring and enriching.

China Journal 1889-1900: An American Missionary Family During the Boxer Rebellion: With the Letters and Diaries of Eva Jane Price and Her Family
Published in Paperback by Collier Books (July, 1990)
Authors: Eva Jane Price and Harrison Evans Salisbury
Average review score:

A revealing journal about Missionary life in China.
This journal documents the tenure of the Price family in China between 1889 and 1900. Missionaries from the U.S., they are caught up in the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, and do not survive it. Eva Jane Price's journal and letters--with other family members writings also included--fully reflect the ambience of western missionary life in China in the late 19th century. As an appendix, there is an account by a Chinese friend of the Prices murder at the hands of the Boxers. But there is much journal and letter writing prior to this. The attitudes of the missionaries towards the Chinese is revealed in this book, and they aren't altogether positive. Yet, overall, misdeeds are abundant for both host and guests. In the end, self-serving political forces in the Forbidden City capitalize on the missionaries unpopularity via mindless thugs. These sorry individuals have come to be known historically as the "Boxers", hence the Boxer Rebellion. This is a unique historical document, and I learned much about this era.

Chip Harrison Scores Again
Published in Paperback by Signet (April, 1997)
Author: Lawrence Block
Average review score:

The saga continues...
Chip Harrison is back. This time he finds a bus ticket to Bordentown, South Carolina. Chip gets himself into trouble and then charmed the local sheriff who helps him get his Social Security card a driver's license. Lands a job as a bouncer at the local bordello and falls in love with the preacher's daughter. Better than No Score but a far cry from Block's series about Bernie Rhodenbarr and Matt Scudder it is light enjoyable reading.

Cholesterol Cures: From Almonds and Antioxidants to Garlic, Golf, Wine, and Yogurt--325 Quick and Easy Ways to Lower Cholesterol and Live Longer

Good advice but rather unappealing menus
Although this book offers sound and practical advice from physicians, nutritionists, and researchers, I was disappointed with its 30-day menu plan because the recommended meals, their nutritional value notwithstanding, are for the most part rather unappealing when compared to equally healthful but better-tasting choices available elsewhere. When I plan my own weekly menus, health is of course a major consideration, but my first priority is always taste. Since I am unwilling to renounce the joys of eating well, I want dishes that satisfy my love of flavorful, exciting food. Therefore, while I find this book very useful for its nutritional guidelines, when it comes to menu choices I turn to cookbooks that contain recipes for dishes that are not only healthful but also taste great. Fortunately there are a number of such books available, two prime examples being "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen" and "The Book of Yogurt," both by Sonia Uvezian. Interestingly, I discovered this author in an issue of Prevention Magazine dating from the late 1970s, which featured recipes from her now-classic "Cooking from the Caucasus," a work that was recommended by physicians from prestigious medical institutions. Her superb yogurt book taught me how to cut fat by substituting yogurt for cream cheese, sour cream, whipped cream, and even mayonnaise, thus allowing me to put otherwise rich dishes from appetizers to desserts back into my life, with the added benefits of better nutrition and, almost always, superior flavor.

The Complete 7 Katas of Judo
Published in Paperback by Overlook Press (November, 1986)
Authors: M. Kawaishi and E. J. Harrison
Average review score:

Interesting book on judo kata
This book contains descriptions on nage-, katame-, gonosen-, kime-, itsutsu-, ju- and koshiki no kata. The descriptions are not the standard Kodokan-versions. This book was written in the 1950s when the katas were not standardised. Each technique is described in words and with drawings. The drawings are not always clear and they can be a little difficult to understand if you don't know the movements allready.

I cannot recommend this book as a basic learning book for kata, but I think that it is a valuable reading for the judoka interested in kata. You can feel the links to the older and more original judo.

It is also valuable to read the introductions by the author and the translator. They will deepen your knowledge about kata.

Finally: I think that this book is valuable if it is used togehter with another book on kata (for example Judo formal techniques or Kodokan Judo), good kata videos or a personal instructor.

Cutting: A Guide for the Non-Pro Competitor
Published in Hardcover by Hungry Minds, Inc (February, 1992)
Author: Sally Harrison
Average review score:

A good overview of the cutting horse world
Sally Harrison's book is an excellent overview of the horses, people, and events that make cutting such an intriguing sport. She includes fascinating insights into the lives and histories of some of the immortal horses of the sport, from Poco Bueno to "Little Peppy" (Peppy San Badger), with commentary on what made them so great. The section on Doc Bar and the "two fools," as well as the description of the day Poco Bueno inspired Pine Johnson to adopt the not-quite-classic habit all cutting riders now favour, are in themselves worth the price of the book.

Harrison includes plenty of people in her story as well, from classic trainers like Buster Welch, Pine Johnson and Leon Harrel, to avid non-pros. All of these people give anecdotal explanations of why the sport and the horses have such a hold on them. Letting people like this tell their stories makes for entertaining and often rather moving reading.

There's one odd, and rather amusing, aspect of this book -- when I tried to look up Leon Harrel in the index I couldn't find him. Then I realized that none of the humans quoted or described in the book are listed in the index. You can look up every passing reference to Smart Date or Doc O Lena, but Harrison appears to have left the people out of the index entirely. That alone tells you all you need to know about Harrison's love for horses and cutting.

My only complaint is that I wanted more and yet more details. This book could have been twice as long and I would still have read it in a sitting.
